While I was a student, I started to draw typefaces. I've kept this up as an occasional habit, and you can read about some of the type on this web site. I wrote a bit about what I was doing, and if you are interested in how and why people go about designing and creating type you might enjoy reading some of the articles.
In 2001 I was given a Victorian printing press, and with my friend Ruth I set up Whitley Wood Press. Letterpress printing became redundant in the 1970s. As a leisure activity, and as a viable way to produce books, posters, handbills and leaflets, it is still remarkably popular; this is probably because it offers such a strong contrast to the way things are done in the mainstream printing industry now. There is more about Whitley Wood Press and its progress on this site.
I currently spend quite a lot of my time specifying, designing and coding things that are only possible online. Back in 2002 I wrote a short article about the web and the way people approach document design that you can read on this site. My undergraduate dissertation is also here, for what it’s worth. The bibliography might be useful! Nowadays I put the things I write on my blog, which is also here.
